Matter
Matter
A substance that has mass and occupies space is classified as matter.
Substances that have no mass and do not occupy space are classified as non-matter.
Unit of measurement of mass = kg or g
Unit of measurement of volume = ml or L
Matter exists in three main states:
- solid
- liquid
- gas
The properties of each state are as follows:
Solid
1. Fixed shape - will not change by itself
e.g. Plasticine is a solid. Its shape will not change unless we do something (like squeezing) to it.
Note: When we apply a force onto an object, we can change its shape (e.g. Plasticine or Blu-tack). When we say fixed shape, we mean that it does not change its shape by itself.
2. Fixed volume
e.g. If a rock has a volume of 34ml in beaker A, its volume when placed in beaker B (or anywhere else) will also be 34ml
3. Cannot be compressed
Since the volume is always the same, thus we can say that solids cannot be compressed.
Liquid
1. No fixed shape - changes according to type of container
Liquids will change their shape according to the container they are in. Square container = square shape. Triangular container = triangular shape
2. Fixed volume
e.g. If beaker A contains 12ml of water, the volume of water when it is poured into another beaker is still 12ml.
3. Cannot be compressed
Since the volume is always the same, thus we can say that liquids cannot be compressed.
Gas
1. No fixed shape - changes according to type of container
Gases are like liquids and will change their shape according to the container they are in. Square container = square shape. Triangular container = triangular shape
2. No fixed volume
e.g. If 10ml of gas is pumped into a 5ml container, the volume of the gas will be 5ml.
If the same 10ml is pumped into a 20ml container, the volume of the gas will be 20ml.
KEY CONCEPT: Gases compresses or expands in order to fill up the container that it is in.
3. Can be compressed and can expand
Please see the above point.
Good luck for tomorrow!
Sincerely,
Mr. Chan

Dear all
The Math SA1 will be held on 14 May (Friday). The scope has been issued to the pupils. Please check with them. The topics covered will be from Unit 1 to 6. Please also take note that P1 to P3 work will also be tested.
For parents who have attended the Principal's talk at the beginning of the year, you would have been informed by the Math HOD that there will be a slight change of the exam format in SA1 and SA2. Please take note of the new format below:
Section A: 15 MCQ X 2M = 30M
Section B: 20 open-ended x 2M = 40M
Section C: A total of 8 problem sums - 2 questions of 3M and 6 questions of 4M = 30 M
The rationale of the change of format is to bridge the gap in standard between P4 and P5 so that our pupils will not experience a great jump when they move to P5 next year.
I have finished teaching Unit4: Angles and the pupils have completed the Topical Test. The papers will be returned to them once they have done the corrections. The pupils will also be doing 1 practice paper this week. It will be returned to them next week once I have marked and gone through with them. Please sign both Topical Test and the pracitce paper when they bring back to show you next week.
Thank you.
Regards
Mdm Toh

Science updates 19th April 2010
Dear Parents,
We have completed the syllabus for the semester. While there are two activities that have not been completed yet, we will complete them and the revision booklet concurrently.
The coverage for the exam is as follows:
P4:
1) Life Cycles
2) Matter
P3:
1) Diversity (Plants and Animals)
2) Interactions (Magnets)
The pupils can also improve in their answering technique for examinations. Most structured questions require a two part answer of cause and effect. An example of this is as follows:
Q: Why didn't Joseph place his seeds in the sun?
A: Because seeds do not need sunlight.
The answer above is inadequate in providing information that fully answers the question. This answer does not fully illustrate why the answer is correct. A more appropriate answer would be as follows:
A: Germinating seeds do not require sunlight as the seed leaves provide the necessary nutrients for growth.
The key concepts have been highlighted for you in bold.
Hope this helps.
Best Regards,
Mr. Chan

Dear all
We are in the midst of completing Unit 3: Fractions. After the pupils have completed the Activity worksheets, we will be doing the supplementary worksheets. There will be a Topical Test on Fractions in Week 4 after the pupils have completed Unit 3. As with the usual practice, files will be given to the pupils to bring home once we are done with all the corrections and filing of the Unit 3 worksheets.
Just to highlight that the topic Fractions has always been a topic that pupils are generally not very confident in. Hence, I do hope they can do more practice on their own to reinforce what they learnt in class.
Thank you

To Nanyang With Love - Art Exhibition
The Nanyang Alumni Association, Nanyang Primary and Nanyang Girls’ High School are going to organise a fund raising art event for Nanyang Primary Indoor Sports Hall and other construction projects. The art exhibition will be held at The ARTrium, MICA Building from 25th to 28th March 2010.
Other than having art work for sale at the exhibition, there is also a ‘Birthday Calendar’ available for sale at $50 each. This calendar is not a conventional time-bound calendar. It is one that allows you or your child to note down the birthdays of loved ones. The calendar is filled with lovely graphics and contains pictures of artworks painstakingly created by pupils and teachers of Nanyang Primary school as well as by the Nanyang Schools Alumni Association. As such, this calendar will serve as a precious momento for your child, even after he/she leaves the school.
Below are pictures to provide you with a glimpse of what this ‘Birthday Calendar’ looks like. We really hope you can support us in this fund raising art event by purchasing a copy of the calendar.
To show your support, just fill up the Order Form which will be given together with a letter by tomorrow. Payments to be made by cheque made payable to 'Nanyang Primary School'. Generous donations above the listed price of $50 is most appreciated and we really thank you for your support!

Dear all
We have completed Unit 2. We will continue with Unit 5: Parallel and Perpendicular lines, instead of Unit 3 (Fractions). Unit 3 will be taught in Term 2. Thus, I would need the pupils to bring their 4A Part 2 Activity Books if they have not done so. We will be starting on Unit 5 in Week 8. Some pupils have not handed in the Math Files which were returned to them last Friday before the CNY break. Please remind them to return if they have not done so.
The pupils have completed the first Topical Test last week. I will be returning the papers to the pupils for the parents' signature once I have gone through and marked the corrections.
The pupils have done the PBT Practice. I will be going through with the class next week. The class have not done well as they are not used to such questions. Nevertheless, this is a good learning experience for all. For your information, the PBT papers will not be returned to the pupils.
Finally, here's wishing one and all a Happy and Prosperous New Year! Gong Xi Fa Cai!

Greetings from Mdm Toh
decteceDear parents of 4A
Greetings to you. I am Mdm Toh, your child's Mathematics this year. It has been 2 weeks and I am getting to know each child better, not just in terms of names, but also discovering the personality of every individual. I am sure your children are also getting to know each of their subject teachers better too.
Just some updates on how we have progressed in class:
1. By the end of Week 3, I would have finished teaching Unit 1: Numbers to 10 000.
2. Filing of worksheets will be done in class weekly. The files will be returned to all pupils after we have completed and filed one topic. Please look through their work and sign on the Content Page. They are to bring back their files the following day. Should you need the file at any time, just ask your child to let me know and I will allow him to bring it home.
3. Usually, there will be Math Homework given to your children almost on a daily basis. This is to build up the rigour and discipline of the subject. I am also aware that many of your children have many commitments after school. I hope you will support your children in term of planning and managing their schedule so that they can cope with the demands of school and other curricular activities. In the event that your child is unable to cope with work given, please do not hesitate to inform me. We will try to strike a balance for the children. Ultimately, all of us want the best for each and every of them.
That's all for now.
Have a nice weekend!

Reminders
13 January 2010.
1. Please remember to write in your journal. I want you to tell me more about yourself, ie. Your likes, dislikes, ambitions, in fact anything that you would like me to know about you. You can beautify your journal entry with pictures, illustrations (drawings), etc. This is Compulsory☺
2. For those who have yet to give me the payment for the subscription of “What’s up”, please do so by tomorrow. (With the exception of those with (NYPS) siblings who had already subscribed beforehand.)
3. For those without a spelling/journal exercise book, please ensure that you do so by tomorrow.
Announcement
Here’s a cool link for a dosage of twisted/fractured fairy tales. They are twisted because their endings/characters had been changed. The stories are rather imaginative, quirky and hilarious. You can write similar stories and squeeze your creative juices just by asking yourself this question…”WHAT IF?”☺ Enjoy Folks!!

The respective subject teachers and I will be putting in our best effort to guide you towards academic excellence. In addition to that, most importantly, we hope to instill good social/moral values in each and every one of our beloved pupils.
My expectations
1.I expect my students to hand in their assigned homework on time. A few
students have failed to do this in this second week of term 1. I did not enforce any form of punishment to this group of students this time round. I understand that it could be a stressful week for you, adapting to a new environment, with new teachers and classmates. Unfortunately, starting from next week, there shall be no more excuses. I will inform your parents if this problem persists.
2.I expect my students to listen attentively when a teacher is delivering his/her lesson. This will ensure that you understand the concepts that the teacher is trying to deliver to you. By doing this, you will then be able to pose questions pertaining to
that topic at the end of the lessons or even request for the teacher to evaluate further.
3. I expect my students to be respectful towards teachers and fellow classmates/schoolmates. No expletives, vulgarities and profanities allowed. A harmonious and pleasant learning environment is vital for students who wish to excel in their studies.
Please check our class blog for updates, important announcements, reminders and administrative issues. Have a pleasant evening ahead.
In the meanwhile, here are some photographs of my gorgeous, helpful and intelligent pupils of 4A☺
Regards
Mr Firouk
